Habitat Kent Happenings

Congratulations to the newest Habitat Kent Homeowners!

Over the last few months, six more families moved into Habitat Kent homes!

Watch this short video to meet everyone.

As spring rolled into summer we celebrated Habitat Kent families making memories in their new homes on Plaza Roosevelt.  I hope you enjoy the smiles and excitement of the new homeowners in this newsletter!  Each year we celebrate a special homeowner who exemplifies our mission, and this year we celebrate Patrice, who shares her Habitat story below.  We continue to be inspired by the resilience of the families we partner with.

After so much time apart, we are experiencing the joy of being TOGETHER. I imagine that’s a feeling you can relate to as well.

Together we can do so much to tackle the issue of affordable housing, helping more families, building more homes, and building them better.  We are grateful for the community support throughout the last year, and we simply could not have done it without our donors and supporters.  We celebrate and appreciate you and look forward to seeing you in person, very soon!

2020 Homeowner Of the Year

Introducing Patrice, the Habitat Kent Homeowner of the Year

Habitat history: Patrice applied to be a Habitat Kent homeowner 11 times before being able to join the program. It was with great delight that she moved into her Habitat Kent home in the Black Hills neighborhood in 2017. She says she loves to recommend our program to anyone who asks her about it.

How she makes our community a better place: Patrice has been a member and volunteer at Renaissance Church for the past seven years, and she has served education and children for over 20 years in her job with GRPS. She says she likes cooking for staff so that they can enjoy a good meal during their busy days.

The reason for it all: Family. Patrice has five children and four grandchildren, and says they all love life with their very own home and yard. It’s her dream to leave her home to her kids.

Her life philosophy: Keep dreaming your dreams, keep pushing and don’t give up. Your dreams will come true!

Building for the future: our new zero-emmisions house

Did you know?

  • Habitat Kent has been building LEED certified homes for 14 years!
  • Through the use of green building materials, efficient appliances, and other techniques, Habitat Kent homeowners have an average energy consumption decrease of 33% in comparison to similar, non-LEED homes. That makes their home more affordable overall,  AND reduces each home’s carbon footprint.
  • We also consider proximity to transportation, schools, and amenities in order to reduce transportation costs for Habitat Kent families and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

And now Habitat Kent is taking healthy, sustainable building to the next level with our first all-electric home!

Our CARBON FOOTPRINT BUILD gives all of us the chance to be a part of better building for Habitat Kent families and our planet.

Starting this month, we’ll be working in the Grand Rapids Roosevelt Park Neighborhood.

Could you make a small monthly gift to Habitat Kent?  It’s an easy and affordable way (like paying for a streaming service!) to make a HUGE difference in the lives of local families dreaming of affordable housing opportunities.

Monthly donors are members of our Bright Future Society. Be a part of a passionate group of people who work together —with opportunities to network, volunteer, and more — to make the future bright for all of us!
